I was lucky enough to be allowed to borrow and restore this old photo in it is Patsy O'Hagan... He played in the 1960 Down team that were the first side from the six Northern Ireland counties to clinch the Sam Maguire Cup. He went on to lift a second All-Ireland medal 12 months later when Down retained the title. O'Hagan also was the first Irishman to score a hat-trick at Wembley Stadium. In the early 1960s, a number of gaelic teams played in a tournament at the world-famous London venue and O'Hagan scored four goals in a match against Galway. After the feat, there were reports in the English press that Chelsea were keen on signing the gaelic footballer. O'Hagan made his name as a full-forward but also played full-back for the Mourne County. He was also a selector for the Down team which won the 1968 All-Ireland title.

The man listed as Jarlath Carey in the back row is actually P J McElroy. The phot is nto form the 1960 final - it may be the 1960 National League Final or possibly 1959 all ireland semi final.
ReplyDeleteThe 'second' Brian Morgan in the front row is Joe Lennon, while the names of all bar James McCartan in the back row are out of sequence, with George Lavery (far right) omitted as a reuslt of the inclusion of Joe Lennon.
Back row should read: James McCartan, Kevin O'Neill, P J McElroy, Sean O'Neill. Leo Murphy, Dan McCartan, Pat Rice, George Lavery
